Erik Nelson is a former US Navy ordnance specialist and a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned both a BA and an MA in History. He was a founding board member of the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust and during his 15-year tenure helped to preserve critical battlefield terrain at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House. Investigating properties for potential purchase and preservation, he discovered wartime features that will remain hidden until those lands are transferred to the National Park Service and interpreted for visitors. As a Fredericksburg city planner for more than 30 years he also became intimately familiar with the landscape related to the Second Battle of Fredericksburg.
